Technical Questions
When determining the appropriate tire size for your vehicle, check the sticker located on the inside of the driver’s side door jamb. This sticker provides detailed information about the recommended tire size dimensions for your specific vehicle. You can also cross-reference this with the numbers printed on the sidewall of your current tires.
The Load Rating (or load index) is a numeric code on the sidewall indicating the maximum weight each tire can safely bear. The Speed Rating is a letter that indicates the maximum speed the tire can safely sustain over a prolonged period under proper inflation.
It is highly recommended to use the exact tire size recommended by your vehicle’s manufacturer. While slight width or aspect ratio changes might fit your rims, they can negatively affect your car’s handling, fuel efficiency, and speedometer accuracy. Rim sizes should never be changed without professional consultation.
General Advice
In extreme Canadian winters, an all-season tire should only be used if it displays the Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF) symbol. These are often referred to as “All-Weather” tires. Standard all-season tires (even those with M+S ratings) use a rubber compound that freezes and hardens in extreme cold temperatures, losing traction. For optimal safety on ice and snow, dedicated winter tires or 3PMSF-rated tires are highly recommended.
You can use All-Weather tires (displaying the 3PMSF symbol) year-round. However, keep in mind that dedicated winter tires shouldn’t be used in the summer, as their soft rubber compound degrades quickly in heat. Swapping between a dedicated Summer/All-Season set and a Winter set extends the life of both and gives you the best performance for the respective season.
